So in order to upgrade my archaic CPU, I have to buy a new motherboard, and thus new RAM.
Current System
Motherboard: ECS C51GM-M (V1.0)
RAM: 4gb DDR2 Patriot Extreme Performance Gaming Series
CPU: AMD Athlon x2 64 3800+, 2.0 Ghz Dual Core
GPU: EVGA Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT
PSU: Coolmax V-60 600W

What I'm Looking At
Motherboard: BIOSTAR N68S3+ AM3
RAM: 8gb DDR3 G.SKILL Value Series
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 455, 3.3GHz Tri-Core
This comes to $155, the CPU and motherboard come in a bundle.
What I'm curious about is if my PSU can support the new CPU, my old GPU, 4 fans, a hard drive, and an optical disk reader. Other than that I just need to know if that's a good buy or not.

Yeah a 600w is plenty.
The cpu is a little bit low end if your going to be gaming. Still a good cpu.
Problem is the website recommends you use a 95w cpu only on this board. So your good there. No real room to upgrade though.
You still will be able to skirt by on what you have.
Also a micro atx board? Do you just have a small case? :D Send me a pic of that case. Now I'm Curious.

The only problem I see is the M/B Chipsets for the ram. Yours is a NVIDIA MCP68S.

Your ram only supports
Intel P55
lntel H55
Intel X48
Intel P45
Intel X38
AMD 890 Series
AMD 790 Series

Whoops
Here try a ram that is as bitchy
Less bitchy ram!
Also do a memory test on your ram when you get your computer running. Just adding that in here. http://www.memtest86.com/.

Thing is if you get incompatible memory. Well it can be a little flaky... for starters it can be slow to read or write. Or wont even write at all. So the system will detect the new ram, but not really use it. Or you will get stuck on post, or a black screen. Yes I've had this happen before. With a M/B that was picky about it's ram. Cough cough EVGA. I went ahead and downloaded the manual for that board. Seems like this ram will be better suited. Do a Memory test on them. If any thing is flaky send that shit back.

I chose that micro cause it's $115 in that combo. Everything else going up to $200 is a Motherboard/APU combo, and I'm told that APUs are shit for gaming. And I don't have the money to throw down a legit system, I just take what I can get. Sorry about the crap pictures, but I don't have many options for lighting, and I'm not about to unplug all the cables to lay it out. Yeah I'm lazy, what of it?
